GUY WAITED OUTSIDE the Dance Factory for three nights before seeing Ericka. It was a Thursday night, and the crowd was heavy as he followed her in. The music was driving hard, and his nose wrinkled at the smell and touch of so many people.

She went directly to the bar and ordered what appeared to be a White Russian. Guy leaned against a cloth-covered post and watched her watch the video. She wore red pants with tight cuffs and a pair of white, two- inch heels. He noticed the glint of an anklet. Her tank top was stretched tight, outlining her breasts snugly. Guy was struck again with how pretty her face was, in a blank sort of way. He thought of Rod picking her up the first time, took a deep breath, and strode up to her.

“Remember me, Ericka?”

She sipped the milky drink, holding the glass with two hands. “What do you want?”

Guy bent down to hear her over the music. “To apologize. I hated running out on you like that, but my friend’s girlfriend was getting sick. We came in the same car.”

“She didn’t look sick to me.” Ericka looked past him, at the video. “You looked like you wanted to be with her, anyhow.”

Guy was surprised. He didn’t think she had been paying that much attention. Or that he was so obvious about Bette. “No,” he said. “You’ve got it wrong. She did get sick, we had to stop the car. Too much to drink. Besides, I came back here to see you, didn’t I?”

She shrugged. “I guess so. I saw you watching me over there.” She gestured toward the pole. “Are you going to run tonight, too?” She drained her glass.

“No.” Guy nodded toward the dance floor. “Want to?” She shook her head. “Buy me another one of these and we’ll go. That’s what you came for, anyhow.”
